Maldives minister claims drop in serious crimes

The minister said the country is seeing the results of the joint efforts between relevant government institutions. "Even our harshest critics would need to admit that there are less stabbings on the streets. There's a drop in murders. And crimes. That we're seeing peace and stability on the horizon," Umar said speaking after inaugurating the strategy of the Maldives Correctional Service for the next four years. Umar also hailed the successful efforts of the government to monitor criminals and re-introduce them to society. He revealed his instructions to the parole board to release a minimum of 100 inmates under parole. The minister added that the government would have the new drug offenders remand centre under operation in the coming weeks to assist drug offenders. The centre will be operated by the correctional service under the direct supervision of the National Drug Agency, he added. During the ceremony, commissioner of prisons Mohamed Husham said the strategy plan drafted with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will further strengthen the functioning of the country's prison system.
