Heavy rain lashed Thinadhoo overnight on Sunday, resulting in widespread flooding in the populous southern city.
Data collected by Maldives Meteorological Service shows the heaviest rainfall the past 24 hours was recorded in Thinadhoo.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the heavy rain, which began at midnight, lasted until around 08:30 am Sunday.

The NDMA said that the rain resulted in flooding in many of the homes, some of which also faced electricity outages.
Electricity has since been restored to affected homes.
The NDMA added that dewatering efforts are in progress in Thinadhoo, using water pumps and by digging trenches.
Citing Mayor Saud Ali, NDMA said that flooding hasn’t resulting in families having to be evacuated from homes.

Saud told Sun that the flooding affected not just residential homes, but also key facilities including the city’s water plant and hospital.
He said that the facilities continue to remain operational, despite the flooding.
“There’s water damage to some equipment. The hospital’s management is sorting this out in collaboration with the Health Ministry. The hospital is working to ensure there’s no disruption to services. One of our key focuses has been to ensure the water plant doesn’t have to be shut down,” he said.
